sweet tweets...

I've admitted several times before that I'm not afraid to admit I'm a nerd. In fact, I'm quite proud of reading books at the gym, visiting the Getty museum to watch the sunset on a Friday night, and listening to National Public Radio. I was home-schooled as a child so I think I'm naturally qualified to wear the crown of Nerdom and carry the scepter of constant affirmation.

It's no surprise then to discuss a statistic I learned while listening to NPR at the gym. New research shows that 73% of Twitter updates are "pointless babble." When I heard this statistic, I immediately grabbed my phone and tweeted that I can wink with both eyes just to perpetuate this stat (note: I'm obtuse when offended).

But in discussion with a good friend about Twitter and this new statistic, he encouraged me to use Twitter as a vehicle of change, discussion, dialogue. Sometimes I tweet scriptures or update facebook with encouraging words just to generate discussion, he said. A lot of my friends aren't Christian so I rarely include the scripture reference just start a dialogue about the words of Christ without them even knowing it. It was an interesting thought. But not a novel one. Scripture is full of life-changing tweets... you know, maxims and proverbs less than 140 characters. Ever since I discussed this, I've decided to make my words count! People, redeem the time for it is short. We only have one life to live and soon it will pass; only what we do for Jesus Christ will last.

Every day during my daily reading I am finding one scripture to tweet or update my facebook as an encouragement or chastening that is beyond my wisdom... for the power of God's word is far more capable of reaching my Twitter followers or facebook friends.

If you have 140 characters to dispense encouragement or wisdom, what would it be? Francis of Assisi said, Preach the gospel at all times. When necessary use words. People, it's necessary.

I love this! My mom is great at tweeting verses and inspiring thoughts. She reads her bible at a coffeeshop every morning and while I'm working at home I always see her tweet updates (@loisdelaine) -- I need to do this more often.

Awww, Jamie, I already love your mama! I've gotta follw her :)

Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

Hello Bianca. I love this blog and the fact that you admitted that not all of your friends are Christians and you still love them the same way you love your Christians friends. Sadly not all Christians are like that, when I was trying to get my life together and follow God with all my heart I found this kind of people that wanted me to live my life the way they live theirs . But I couldn’t so because I was isolated from those “Christians Friends” I left the church I was attending, I know big mistake but I felt like a hypocrite. Being there and pretending to fit in and become somebody I wasn’t. How do you manage the you have to be “holy “pressure at church.they even rejected my FB friend request and told, we cannot be seeing with people like you.. that really hurt me. Thanks God I found your blog and it has become my devotional..

I'm totally doing this. I don't think you'll mind if I steal this idea.

One incredible thing I heard years ago from a friend before we left for a mission trip to Ireland:

"God made the entire earth and everything in it in six days... Imagine what he can do with you."

This is great Bianca! It has been amazing to see how twitter has evolved over time, and to watch everyone's updates. I love your encouraging updates, just as much as I love your blog! (@tirayoung) Have a wonderful day!

@Carrie: Copy it!!! Let's do it together :)
@Anonymous: Jesus associated with prostitutes, tax collectors, and the debase of society, but He DID NOT change who He was. He still remained sanctified. Some people think they can hangout with whoever without regard to being careful about associating with non-Christians. That's not good either. Balance is the KEY! Be like Jesus, love like Jesus, live like Jesus. That is the true way of living out the gospel.
@Tira: You always have had kind things to encourage me... even on my [other] blog.

okay this really made me think... i think a lot of mine are pointless (like complaining about being sore, or talking about what I'm eating).... who really cares about that stuff? I think this is great and I'm excited!!! AND... I have a lot of business contacts on there which makes it even more exciting cuz a lot of them need Jesus :) love you... and your tidbits of wisdom... even if you are just quoting God :)

B- I love you!!
I so enjoy NPR radio and yes, the Getty!
Speaking of Twitter, I think we all have been trying 'to figure out Twitter' - I think we've 'figured' it out!

"When necessary use words. People, it's necessary." Amen! @JohnPiper does an awesome job at using 140 words to glorify God and encourage in the faith.
